Tractor Trailer Crashes Into 23rd Street Subway Station At 6th Avenue

A tractor trailer crashed into the entrance to the F and M trains at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue.

A tractor trailer went rogue during its morning commute, somehow breaking free from its truck cab and crashing into the 6th Avenue entrance to the 23rd Street F/M station. According to police, no one was injured, and somehow, the collision did not affect subway service. (The NYCT Subways Twitter account corroborates this claim, for what it's worth.)

An NYPD spokesperson told Gothamist that the tractor trailer in question disconnected from its cab around 8 a.m., and went careening into the 23rd Street - 6th Avenue entrance to the F and M lines. Police did not have more information on what might have caused the trailer to come loose, but said the city was currently working to clear the scene. 23rd Street was closed to traffic between 6th and 7th Avenues.

As you can see from the footage below, this behemoth sprawled diagonally across 6th Avenue, reportedly blocking all lanes at what would ordinarily be rush hour. Luckily, and likely because it's a holiday, no cars or pedestrians were implicated as the trailer swept through this usually bustling intersection.

Police have packed the rogue trailer onto a tow truck, and the station entrance itself sustained relatively little damage: The trailer knocked loose one of the side gates on the stairwell, but electronic signage still seemed to function. About an hour and a half after the crash, the entrance itself remained cordoned off with police tape.

The 23rd Street Station reopened in November after four months of renovations, its walls newly adorned with mosaics of William Wegman's Weimaraners, i.e., dogs doing human stuff. No word from the NYPD on whether or not these majestic arts were damaged, but it seems the station escaped mostly unscathed.
