The MTA Is Selling This Used Subway Trash Can For Just $375

Look, you probably already have a trash can. And maybe, like me, you're using it frequently while spring cleaning ahead of the Hot Times descending upon us.

But if for some reason you're lacking a trash receptacle at your home, or are into the wave of civic institutions visually influencing fashion—in what critic Daisy Alioto has called "Civicore"—might you be interested in this bespoke "refuse canister" formerly owned by the MTA?

As one Redditor pointed out, the MTA recently listed one of its trash cans, a ubiquitous sight in subway stations, for sale. The agency is asking a cool $300 for the hulking used bin, which they describe as "authentic, unique, and probably one of the most useful items in every home." Unfortunately that doesn't include the $75 processing fee, "plus the cost of insurance, shipping & handling." And you also have to pick it up yourself, so I hope you have an enormous van handy.

Some might say that's a small price to pay for a historic trash palace, which appears to be emblazoned with the ever-present "Litter Stops Here" sticker. Imagine everything it's seen! Unspeakable things. Though a lurking Trash Panda, like the one found at 14th Street a few weeks back, is not included...probably.

If you're not in the market for a used subway trash can, the MTA is also selling a used subway bench for $650 (same price as 2012?!), some vintage "grabholds" for $25, and a $500 used subway seat, which the MTA is promoting with this irresistible marketing copy: "Can you imagine adding an authentic seat from the subway car to your home, work or office? The 'oohhs' and 'ahhs' you will get from your family, friends, co-workers and customers!"
