Subway delays have become an unfortunately normal, unceasingly dumb part of New Yorkers' routines, to the point that we've all become pretty numb to having to plan around frequent delays in service. But every once in awhile, there is such chaos and confusion across the system, you have to step back and admire the sheer audacity of this incoherence. And so it went for many commuters this morning.
Hi @MTA last night I was on an A train stalled under the river for 90 mins (eventually we all had to walk to the front car to hop onto the high st platform) and now I’ve spent 50 mins on a C train that became an F train and is now a D train.
But congrats on the new app pic.twitter.com/bpCcvujrHq— Kengo Tsutusmi (@kengos) August 8, 2018
Train being evacuated this morning @MTA stuck on #Ctrain under East River for almost 1 hour. We were the last car and had to walk thru the other cars to the front. Fix this mess #powerfailure #signalproblems #dysfunctionaltransit pic.twitter.com/PgWyFrwSUk

hi from the sweaty R train platform where I’ve been waiting for 20 minutes! pic.twitter.com/7LBbjJHv1h

I'm stuck on an A train stopped at 103 for 10 minutes now. The conductor just came on and said "we are experiencing severe congestion due to a power failure in lower Manhattan. Once we get to 59th street we'll have an update. We'll either get rerouted or turn around and go back"

Evacuations! Sweat lodges on platforms! Confusing announcements! Stalled trains! Underwater trains! Magic tricks where C trains turn into F trains then turn into D trains! Wig brawls! Wait...wig brawls?
Well, the A/C was delayed, then when an A train arrived I couldn’t board due to a full on brawl which included a woman’s wig being pulled off. Now due to an electrical issue, this A train is an F. I feel like Moses in the desert today.

According to the MTA, there were delays on...you know what? I don't even quite understand this one. There were signal problems on the A/C/E lines, but also on the D lines, and also the F and B lines were affected? Those are all letters in the alphabet, that I know for sure, so maybe we should all cling to what we know and just ride this one out. I mean, not that these trains are exactly "rideable" right now, but you catch my drift.
Our signal team is troubleshooting an issue with the computer that controls the signal system for the A, C, and E lines at Fulton St. We are working to resume service ASAP. There are still major delays; please take another line (1, 2, 3, N, R, 4, or 5) if you can. https://t.co/BtdZGiWe6n

This should not be normal. Tens of thousands were delayed, stranded and rerouted today. It is why we need to #fixthesubway. @NYGovCuomo we need dedicated funding like congestion pricing, without delay! pic.twitter.com/4r5wyFBjiB

At least this is helping other industries, like ride-sharing apps and therapists:
I was just stuck underground for 45 minutes on the @NYCTSubway C train between Canal and Chambers. The train was evacuated, and the train ahead had no idea it was moving or not. So I decided to take a @lyft, and the first driver decides to cancel on me.

Stuck under the East River for an hour. @MTA YOU HAVE GOT TO FIGURE THIS OUT. People start to panic, and anxieties and stress flare up. You must do better. #FixOurSubway!!!!!!

We'll give the last word on this morning's commute to MSNBC host Chris Hayes:
