March Roars To Life With Snow, Rain, And Sleet This Weekend

March 1, 2019, 1:58 p.m.

Maybe a good time to stay indoors?

Snow, sleet, and rain are likely this weekend...lovely!

Snow, sleet, and rain are likely this weekend...lovely!

March is the most unpredictable and cruelest month of the year, if you ask me. Spring—our nice cyclical reminder that after a prolonged wintery stretch, things usually tend to warm up around now—is (somewhere) around the corner.

Or is it? If this weekend is any indication, winter is still very much gasping along: According to the National Weather Service, there's a chance of snowfall tonight, and tomorrow, and even more of it on Sunday! Even though it's not a massive snowstorm, it's going to be annoying enough to put the kettle on and post up inside for a few days.

Friday morning saw snow flurries that mostly cleared out in the afternoon, and since then it's been cloudy with temperatures in the mid-30s. The New York City Department of Sanitation issued a Snow Alert for Friday at 5 p.m., stating that it would be issuing "updates as the snow event approaches." For now, it's possible that we'll see snow again before 9 p.m., then a delightful mixture of snow, sleet, and rain between then and midnight. All told, it's possible that the snow and sleet might accumulate up to 2 inches.

On Saturday—you guessed it!—the possibility of snow again is nigh. In the morning, it's likely that it'll snow and rain simultaneously, according to the NWS. It's expected to taper off, not accumulate too much (only half an inch, if anything), and the rest of the day is expected to be overcast, with a high of 42.

Of course there's more, and it gets incrementally worse! The strongest of the three "systems" is slated to unleash its wrath on Sunday night. There's a 60% chance of precipitation on Sunday afternoon after 4 p.m., and will continue throughout the night. Accuweather has issued an alert for Sunday night into Monday morning, because around 2 a.m., it's looking like there will be rain combined with snow, which will continue into Monday morning's commute. While NBC News notes that "very preliminary projections indicate it could be a whopper," New York City is expected to get 1 to 3 inches of snow on Sunday night. All told, this isn't a ton, but we'll see what happens.

Either way, I can't say I'm pleased about how March is kicking off. Part of me was hoping for some rain here and there, but several back to back snowfalls? Come on. I can't keep up with this constant trading-off of appropriate outerwear for the elements, either (I'm from Texas, okay?). One bright spot: If you're like me, maybe you have a backlog of books to read, and you'll be using this weekend's consistently gloomy weather to put a dent in them.
