Elderly Woman Seriously Injured After Getting Hit By MTA Bus

A 70-year-old woman was seriously injured Monday after she was hit by an MTA bus driver and dragged almost 30 feet, authorities said.

The victim was walking north on 2nd Avenue past East 35th Street when she was hit by a Q44 bus at around 9:30 a.m. According to a preliminary investigation, the bus driver was making a left turn when he struck the woman, who was in the crosswalk at the time. She was then dragged between 20 and 30 feet, at which point the bus rolled over her foot, police said.

“She was trying to cross the street, and the bus was turning, and the two clashed,” a construction worker who saw the crash told the Post. “You could hear screams coming from under the bus—she was pinned underneath.”

The driver remained on the scene, while the woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious but stable condition. There have been no arrests or summons issued to the driver, police said. A spokesperson for the MTA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The incident comes one day after the MTA was ordered to pay $12 million to the family of 85-year-old Rong Xing Wu, who was fatally struck by a bus back in 2013. The MTA refused to settle with the man's family, and insisted on taking the case to court, according to Wu's attorney. On Sunday, a jury found the MTA was fully liable for the man's death.
