Burglar Steals Briefcase, iPad From Home Of Paul Manafort's Former Banker

One of Paul Manafort's former bankers had his Midtown Manhattan penthouse burglarized overnight. And NBC News reports that only a few particular items were taken: a briefcase, an iPad and sneakers.

An NYPD spokesperson said the break-in occurred around 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning at an apartment on West 58th Street near the corner of Seventh Avenue. Police say banker David Fallarino, whom the Huffington Post called Manafort's "front office banker" at Citizens Bank, told authorities that he left the terrace door of his apartment open before he went to sleep Monday, then woke up to a noise.

NBC reports that the 38-year-old Fallarino found "a crow bar on the terrace, the sources say. There were no apparent signs of forced entry, the sources say, but Fallarino reported his wine cabinet was open and there was a bottle of wine on the floor. The briefcase, iPad and sneakers were the only items missing; the contents of the first two were unknown."

The NYPD says no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Fallarino has not been charged with any crime in relation to Manafort's trials, nor did he testify despite being identified as a major figure in the case. Two of Fallarino's assistants did testify during Manafort's trial, describing a number of emails Fallarino had sent and received, "framing the sort of financial information he needed to receive from Manafort. Earlier in the week, jurors had seen evidence of how Manafort took these emails as instructions showing how to effectively falsify his financial documents to win approval of the loan he desired."

The former Trump campaign chairman was convicted on eight felony fraud-related counts earlier this month. It came out this week that his defense team held plea discussions with prosecutors to resolve a second set of charges ahead of his D.C. trial next month, but they didn't reach a deal. In this case, Manafort has been charged by special counsel Robert Mueller with obstruction of justice, failure to register as a foreign agent and conspiracy to launder money, among other things. That trial is supposed to get underway on September 24th.
