A woman from London was injured while visiting a Jersey Shore beach on Monday afternoon, when a gust of wind sent a beach umbrella flying through her leg. The freak beach accident occurred in Seaside Heights near Hiering Avenue.
Beachgoer Ricardo Zepeda, 25, happened to be at the beach at the same time and witnessed the response, sharing images on Instagram and writing, "Bruuuuh holy shit! This lady had an umbrella go through her leg 5 feet away from me! There was a strong gust of wind, there were a couple umbrellas flying. One of the corners of a random one went THROUGH HER FUCKING LEG! That could have been me!"
"I was just working on my tan, when, out of nowhere, this gust of wind came and knocked a few umbrellas loose," Zepeda told Gothamist. "It knocked a few umbrellas loose, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw something fly by."
He happened to look over at the woman, who screamed, "My leg!"
Zepeda said the woman was impaled in her upper ankle, "You could see about five inches o the umbrellas from the other side." Noting that the umbrella seemed pretty sturdy ("It was about two inches thick"), he said, "For it to go that deep, it must have been going really fast."
According to the Asbury Park Press, the 67-year-old London woman "was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune." A local police detective said "a portion of an aluminum umbrella pierced her right ankle and was driven entirely through 'due to the force of the wind.'"
A bolt cutter was used to "dislodge" the umbrella. The woman, identified as Margaret Reynolds, said in a statement released by the hospital, "It was a beautiful day and a gust of wind blew the umbrella. It was just an accident."
