Police are investigating the death of a baby boy who was found floating in the Manhattan side of the East River on Sunday afternoon.

Officials say a pedestrian waved down two police officers around 4 p.m. near South Street and Dover Street to report a small child in the water.

Monte Campbell, visiting from Oklahoma, reportedly went into the water to remove the baby. His wife, Diana Campbell, told PIX 11, "You could see its little legs just floating and his head was in the water. My husband was like 'I have to go in.'"

Their son said, "My mom, she was out here and she was kind of just looking in the water, and she calls my dad over and says 'there's a baby in the water!' As soon as they called the police my dad was like, 'I'm gonna jump in, I wanna grab it.' He's a physician so he knows how to do CPR and stuff like that."

The baby, reportedly 8 months old, was brought from the embankment to a pedestrian walkway and officers also performed CPR while waiting for EMS. The baby was pronounced dead at NY Downtown Hospital.

Diana Campbell posted a news story about the incident on her Facebook, adding, "Asking for prayers for this beautiful baby boy... someone out there knows what might have happen to him. May God guide the N.Y.P.D in solving this mystery...."
