These Are Your 2017 Manhattanhenge Dates

Every year New Yorkers stand in the middle of busy Manhattan streets to capture a shot of the sun perfectly aligning with our street grid. This phenomena is known as Manhattanhenge, and was discovered and named by Neil deGrasse Tyson, who also holds the copyright. The event happens just four times a year, and the American Museum of Natural History just announced the 2017 dates.

The museum notes that prime viewing locations include "large cross streets such as 14th, 34th, 42nd, 57th, and 79th." They also recommend arriving 30 minutes ahead of time to stake out a spot and set up.

On May 30th, there will be a public program (starting at 7 p.m.) "highlighting the history and astronomy of this spectacle." It will take place at the Hayden Planetarium and feature Jackie Faherty, a research associate in the Museum’s Department of Astrophysics.
