Maybe he was sad about Mrs. Met dumping him?

Mr. Met, beloved baseball monster and smiling avatar of the New York Metropolitans, got a little too much into the New York spirit during last night's Mets game at Citi Field and was caught on video turning around and flipping a fan off as he retreated into a tunnel. Man I hope breakup season hasn't come for Mr. and Mrs. Met .

Twitter user and Mets fan Tony T had an especially rough night at the ballpark, as not only did nominal ace Jacob deGrom lay an egg in a start in which he walked five and gave up two home runs and seven runs total, but Mr. Met flipped him the bird at some point during the game as well.

Tony T insisted he didn't provoke Mr. Met:

In Mr. Met's defense, you would also want to flip off 95 to 100 percent of the people you met at Citi Field (this includes myself and most of my family members who go to Mets games). The Mets, not really interested in this mitigating factor, quickly released a statement condemning the hilarious act of bird flippery.

And yet somehow the revelation of Jose Reyes' second family didn't even merit a tweet from the team, much less a hastily assembled condemnation graphic. The Mets also announced that following the incident, Mr. Met was day-to-day with right elbow soreness, but was refusing to take an MRI.

An anonymous Mets official told the AP that multiple humans wear the Mr. Met costume during each season, and that the individual who portrayed Mr. Met on Wednesday night will never be Mr. Met again.
